Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul's strongly worded criticism of the Turkish press following the visit by a Hamas delegation to Ankara has itself been the target of attack by opposition leaders, unions, and media organizations. Following negative coverage of the Hamas stay in the capital, FM Gul was quoted as saying "I think it is clear that the Turkish press is open to manipulation by secret services and diplomats." In a sharply worded response, main opposition leader Deniz Baykal of the Republican People's (CHP) Party said "A ruling party increasingly stuck in the corner from time time throws accusations and blame at the press."

Speaking further, Baykal said "The implication that somehow the press, through its coverage of the Hamas visit, is serving foreign interests, and is committing some sort of treason to Turkey, is nothing more than an attempt to cover up the truth in this matter. The Foreign Minister has no right to criticize broadcasts or articles that allow the Turkish public to learn all the details about a stance that will harm Turkey....Does the Foreign Minister have the right to criticize this?"
