The Foundation General Directorate has announced plans to establish museums in 8 cities across Turkey to protect works of art and items of historical value from leaving the country. Turkey suffers from a lucrative smuggling trade of these works and by setting up the museums, the Directorate hopes to protect the national treasures from being taken out of the country. The Directorate currently owns 3 libraries and four museums with plans to open museums across the country underway in Ankara, Istanbul, Kayseri, Tokat, Konya, Bursa, Kastamonu, and Edirne. Ankara and Tokat museums will be ready within a few months

"Work to establish museums in eight cities is underway so that no further items will be stolen. In the upcoming years, we will work to increase the number of these museums in a way that every city will have a museum," said Foundations Director General Yusuf Beyazit.

Around 20,000 items in Turkey's mosques have been catalogued as historical works. For each one of them inventory cards with colored photographs have been prepared, 10,000 items have been collected so far for their protection and will be on display in the museums.
