An MP from the main opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party, Izmir's Canan Aritman, has brought the question of last week's visit to Ankara by Hamas leader Halit Meshaad to the frontline agenda of the Turkish Parliament (TBMM). Speaking in front of the TBMM yesterday, Aritman questioned in which capacity Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul had met with Meshaad and the Hamas delegation at AKP headquarters in Ankara.

AKP statements following the meetings with Meshaad had clarified that Gul's participation at the meeting with Meshaad had been not as official Foreign Minister for Turkey, but as an AKP representative.
Aritman's questions yesterday before the TBMM were: "Isn't it necessary for a foreign minister who has used his party identification as his primary identification to then resign from his position? Do party interests come before the interests of the country?" Aritman also questioned why it was that the Turkish Foreign Ministry had paid the hotel and meal bills for the Hamas delegation if in fact they were the guests of the AKP: "Is it normal for the Foreign Ministry to pay the bills for guests of particular parties?"
