    Malaysia's Proton targets Europe through Turkey

    Malaysian officials told the Anatolian Agency that the Malaysia's carmaker Proton was planning to increase its operations in Turkey after the considerable growth of the Turkish automotive sector in recent years.

    The Turkish automotive sector reached a record-level manufacturing figure of 1.1 million motor vehicles in 2007 by attracting the attention of giant automotive firms. Turkey is expected to become the 10th country manufacturing the highest number of motor vehicles in the next four years.

    Proton also aims at entering the European market through Turkey. Proton, exporting cars to more than 50 countries such as the United Kingdom, South Africa and Australia, is Malaysia's national carmaker and was established in 1983 under the direction of the former prime minister, Tun Mahathir Mohamad.
