A crowd attempted to lynch 4 people who opened a banner reading "We will not be soldiers in Israel" during August 30 ceremonies in Istanbul yesterday. Citizens attending the ceremonies on Istanbul's Vatan Boulevard responded to the banner, chanting "Martyrs never die, the country will not be divided!" and then moved to attack the banner-holders.
Police, intervening, used pepper gas to disperse the crowds, and brought the 4 protestors to the police headquarters for their own safety. Later reports confirmed that all 4 of the protestors were either currently or sometime in the recent past associated with Istanbul University.
