In the wake of the growing crisis surrounding the Danish caricatures of Mohammed, the European Union and the Islamic Conference Organization (ICO) have decided to take action together. Representatives from both the EU and the ICO made a joint call for calm in the United Nations two days ago, and yesterday, they gave a signal that more immediate and active policies are on their way. To that end, EU Chief of Foreign Policy, Javier Solana, will be on his way to the Middle East region next week for high level meetings.

A written statement issued by Solana yesterday said "The relations between EU citizens and citizens of the Arab world have been developed with great effort over the years. We will not allow these relations to be toyed with in such a way." Solana will begin his trip through the Middle East in Saudi Arabia next week, where he will meet with ICO head Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. He will then meet with leaders of Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine.
