ISTANBUL - Costa Cruises, an Italian tourism group and cruise company, presented its new cruise ship Costa Luminosa in Karaköy, İstanbul on Monday.

Costa Cruises’ Angelo Capurro and tour firm Setur’s general manager, Üstün Özbey, attended Monday’s press conference. "This cruise ship represents a major innovation for Costa Cruises in Istanbul," Capurro said. Noting that Costa Luminosa confirms the firm’s commitment to Istanbul as a cruise destination, he said: "In 2009 there will be 34 calls in Istanbul; the ship will carry 100,000 guests to Istanbul. In 2010 this figure is anticipated to increase to 41 calls and 110,000 guests."

"The Turkish market is very important for us, because it is brisk and active. Before, we had Turkish clients only in summer, but now this period has extended. We have Turkish clients in all seasons," Capurro said.

Speaking to Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review after the meeting, Capurro said the firm’s sales are growing in Turkey. "The Turkish market is going to be important for us in the future," he continued. "We cannot give any figures regarding how many passengers we are expecting, but we believe in this market. As our growth is steady, we can focus on investments in Turkey in the future."

The ship has 1,130 cabins, can carry up to 2,826 guests and cost 450 million euros. "We have targeted the best service for our clients, with its special design, Murano glass chandeliers, paintings and sculptures of contemporary artists, 4D cinema, golf and Grand Prix simulator, Costa is aiming at high-end clients," said Capurro. "Luminosa means light and we try to reflect the light in our ship with the special design of lights and its inner decor."

Costa Cruises has five new ships to present to the market by 2012, totaling an investment of 2.4 billion euros. Apart from Costa Luminosa, the firm readies to launch Costa Pacifica and then Costa Deliziosa. It aims to carry 1.5 million passengers in 2010.
