The Kurdish regional administration in northern Iraq is ready to share the administration of Kirkuk with the other ethnic groups in the province, the local leader told Turkey’s state-run Anatolian Agency.

Nechirvan Barzani, the leader of the local administration in northern Iraq, said not only Kurds, but also Turkmen, Arabs and Assyrians were living in Kirkuk.

"The parties should not have concern over the matter," Barzani said, adding the regional administration in northern Iraq wanted Kirkuk to be managed in a fair way as a Kurdish region.

Barzani said the problem in Kirkuk, an ancient city that once was part of the Ottoman Empire, stemmed from economic and administrative sharing of the city, adding natural resources of the city belonged to all Iraqis as it was stated in Iraq's constitution.

The complex issues over who will control the energy-rich province, which is home to Arabs, Turkmen and Kurds, has repeatedly dogged passage of the provincial elections bill in Iraq.

Iraqi Parliament earlier this month adopted a revised version last month which puts off a decision on Kirkuk, while authorizing the election in other provinces.

Turkey is an important neighbor for the regional Kurdish administration, it wants to establish positive relations with Turkey, he added.

Barzani said oil production would be on the rise in Kurdish region very soon, and the Kurdish administration is planning to ship the oil to world markets via Turkey.

The failure to find a solution for Kirkuk’s regional council has forced the postponement of local elections in Iraq initially scheduled for October 1.

Turkey sees the final status of Kirkuk is another major concern, and thinks a hurried referendum, which already had been postponed, might have triggered ethnic clashes in Kirkuk.
