Iranian FM Mottaki arrives in Istanbul for surprise visit

Iranian Foreign Minister Monachehr Mottaki arrived yesterday in Istanbul for a surprise visit, bringing with him messages for Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad. Mottaki also reportedly used his presence in Turkey to press for a more effective role by Ankara in getting the United Nations Security Council to bring about a lasting and deep-rooted cease-fire in Lebanon.
Mottaki reminded both Erdogan and Gul of Turkey's good relations with the permanent members of the UN Security Council, and within this framework, urged the Ankara leadership to take up a more active role in bringing about a cease-fire between Lebanon and Israel.
Mottaki's meeting with PM Erdogan at his Besiktas offices reportedly lasted for 40 minutes.
