Interior Minister Besir Atalay has said that laws concerning traffic accidents in Turkey are to be tightened in coming days.

A series of new regulations aimed at penalizing drivers who flout road rules are set to be implemented, including an increase in alcohol spot tests, and monetary fines for drivers not wearing their seat belts, drivers needlessly honking their car horns, and even pedestrians not using specially marked walkways.

In addition, drivers involved in traffic accidents not resulting in death or injury which occur in large cities during rush hour times will no longer be required to wait for police officers to come to the scene, a regulation which up until now has been the cause of enormous traffic back-ups, with lines of cars waiting behind the cars involved in the accident.
