Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul spoke for the first time with the Greek media following the Greek rejection of the Annan peace plan for Cyprus. In a statement to the Greek newspaper Elefterotipia, Gul said "We will not get anywhere with the 'rejection politics,' " a comment which was perceived as being a message to both the Greek Cypriots and the Athens administration.

Underscoring the importance of Greek acceptance of the latest Turkish action plan on Cyprus, Gul also said "Everyone should understand that stability, trust, and cooperation will not occur only with Turkey's efforts. There have to be joint efforts on both countries' parts." Referring to the question of whether or not Turkey will open its ports to the Greek Cypriots, Gul said "We are ready to open our ports. But in parallel procedure to this, the isolationary measures and embargos currently in effect against Northern Cyprus must also be lifted."
