Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, leaving for an official visit to Finland, made a brief statement at Ankara's Esenboga Airport, where he also answered reporters' questions pertaining to some world events.

Speaking about the recent earthquake in Pakistan, Gul touched on the catastrophic nature of the disaster, and Turkey's role in helping out: "From the very first day, Turkey tried to help our brothers and sisters in Pakistan," said Gul, who also noted that he had put in a request for help to the United Nations in getting 700 tons of aid waiting in Mersin to the earthquake area.

Gul told reporters that the final decision made was to form an air corridor from Incirlik in Turkey to Pakistan, transporting aid from various points in Turkey to Incirlik first, from where they will leave immediately for Pakistan. Gul said that Turkish airplanes as well as NATO forces will cooperate in this endeavor.
