Greek PM Karamanlis gears up for Ankara; plans to pay "private" call on Fener Patriarchate

Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, ignoring the loud protests of the conservative Greek political group LAOS, is going ahead with plans for his visit to Ankara, where he will reportedly be placing a wreath on the Anitkabir, the masoleum for Ataturk.

Karamanlis, who with this visit will be the first Greek leader of his stature in 49 years to come to the Turkish capital on an official visit, will also be stopping in at the Fener Greek Patriarchate during the Istanbul leg of his trip to Turkey. According to protocol, while Karamanlis' contacts in Ankara are to be "official," his visit to the Fener Patriarchate falls under his "private" schedule.
