A 12-year-old Turkish girl died in the eastern city of Van on Sunday after coming down with bird flu symptoms. Although Fatma Ozcan tested negative for the H5N1 virus, her brother has tested positive, and doctors suspect that she contracted the disease. If both children are confirmed as having contracted the virus, it will bring the total number of victims to 20 within two weeks. The family come from Dogubayazit, where the three siblings who died from the strain last week also lived.
The culling process is now said to be under control in the eastern Agri province, and a campaign has started to inform the people. Many of who are now killing their own birds as authorities have been slow to reach the remote parts of the province due to bad weather which has hampered the culling process.
