Universities across the country, were stirring when they heard news of PM Erdogan's comments to the German press; on the head scarf ban in Turkey. The PM told German Welt am Sonntag newspaper, "The ban on head scarfs in universities must be lifted and a legal solution is on the way. We are a democratic country and democracy allows citizens to express their religious beliefs, without obsessive religious symbols."The University's Rectors Committee, which has already issued three statements against the head scarf, is preparing to issue a fourth anti-head scarf statement at a meeting on February 11. Prof. Erdogan Tezic, President of the Higher Education board YOK, said, “A new agreement about the head scarf, will cause new legal problems.” He added, “Theses are the decisions of the Constitutional Court , the ECHR and Appeals Court about head scarf, we must respect these decisions.” In its statement on February 11, the Rectors Committee will underline that the head scarf be branded a political symbol.
