ANKARA - The number of foreign tourists visiting Turkey fell 7.5 percent in March from a year earlier, the second decline this year.

About 1.2 million foreign visitors arrived in March, down from 1.3 million in the same month of 2008, the Tourism Ministry in Ankara said on its Web site yesterday. In the first three months of the year, total foreign tourist arrivals were 4.2 percent lower than in the same period of 2008, it said.Revenue from tourism helps Turkey finance a current-account deficit that stood at $33.1 billion in the 12 months through February, or about 4 percent of gross domestic product. The country earned $21.9 billion from tourism in 2008, 19 percent more than the year before.
