Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, at a joint press conference with Czech Republic Foreign Minister Cyril Svoboda, made a statement about the Hamas visit to Ankara yesterday, saying "As Turkey, we are trying to carry out the duties which fall to us to take care of during these critical days. A request (from Hamas) came to us for this visit, and we analyzed it. We think it will be an important contribution."

Speaking further on Hamas, and their surprise and somewhat controversial visit to Ankara, Gul also said:

"There were democratic elections in Palestine. Turkey sent observers. All the world is united in agreement that the elections were fair....We have to greet the decision of the Palestinian people with respect. These are important days....it is necessary to make sure the right messages get out to the representative of the Palestinian people, and to make sure the business gets going on the right tracks. Because if things start on the wrong tracks, not just the Palestinians, but also the Israelis, as well as the entire world will be damaged by it....."
