Flooding in Silifke reveals historical mosaic

A landslide caused by flooding in the Camiikebir neighbourhood of Silifke, in the Mersin province, uncovered an unexpected treasure – a Byzantine mosaic.

Archaeologists have determined that the work of art probably dates back to the 5th century.
Ilhami Öztürk, director of the Silifke museum, said that the recovery effort, approved by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, is ongoing. So far, archaeologists have uncovered an area of 5.40 metres long and 3.60 metres wide.
