The current bird flu that is gripping Turkey is now stretching as far west as Istanbul, initial tests on two dead chickens found in the cit's district of Kucukcekmece indicated they were infected by the bird flu virus, sending residents of the Istanbul suburb into hospital for testing said Istanbul province deputy health director Mehmet Bakar on Monday.

The Turkish Health Minister Recep Akdag told a press briefing on Tuesday that the official number of cases in Turkey was 15: "The total number of cases in our country is 15 confirmed by laboratory tests, and out of those 15, three children have died."

The government has been heavily criticized for not dealing with the crisis effectively, following the deaths of three siblings last week in the village of Dogubeyazit, where chickens are still roaming openly amongst sick birds.
