“U.S. Cyprus Special Envoy Thomas Weston, who paid a surprise visit to Turkey last week brought a letter to Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul from U.S. State Secretary Colin Powell. The letter, whose subject is Cyprus, encourages Turkey to resume talks on the basis of the Annan Plan and responds to the messages of Ankara. These messages were revealed in the meeting of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in Davos. Ankara calls for a guarantee of equality, because, as Cyprus will become an EU member, nothing remained to force Greek Cypriots for solution… That is why Erdogan voiced the desire for a new and trustworthy mediator for the solution of the Cyprus issue.”�
