Fatih Cekirge: What did Turkey’s ruling AKP and pro-Kurdish DTP discuss

Hurriyet daily’s Ankara bureau reported on an important issue that reminded me of the long-late nights in journalism when the entire front page is rewritten…Firstly, I want to congratulate them.

Haberin Devamı

The article related to a dinner meeting attended by Dengir Mir Mehmet Firat, deputy chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the second most influential person in the party, and Ahmet Turk, according to some the leading figure, according to others, the second man of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP) and two of his parliamentarian associates... This was an important dinner...

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had earlier said he "would not meet with the DTP unless they recognize Abdullah Ocalan (the leader of the outlawed PKK organization) as a terrorist." But this dinner meeting reveals that Erdogan's decision has transformed into "indirect talks".

The first important point is here...

The AKP and the DTP are rival parties in the upcoming elections in Turkey's southeastern region.

In a separate meeting on the same day as the DTP-AKP meeting, Emine Ayna, who according to some is the leading female figure and according to others, is the second leader of the DTP, accused the AKP of torturing Ocalan... In other words, Ahmet Turk's contact is a kind of "cooing" while the "hawkish leader of the party" was attacking at demonstrations holding aloft a portrait of Ocalan... This is the second important point of the dinner.

So, what could have been spoken during that dinner? It is possible that the conversation between the parties went something like this:

Firat: We are coming up to the local elections and the tensions are increasing. This should be stopped.

Haberin Devamı

Turk: We also want the same thing. But the actions taken against Ocalan are increasing the tension. Why is this happening?  Nobody benefits from violence. Dialogue should be established.

Firat: A dialogue cannot exist if you continue to glorify Ocalan. Why do you force this situation? Who can benefit from the provocations conducted on behalf of Ocalan.

Turk: We also realize this. There is no point seeking a pardon for Ocalan. But you need to be aware of his impact on the public. Those who make him suffer are bringing him to the fore…

Firat: Nobody will benefit from this tense atmosphere with the elections approaching...

DARK PLAN

This should have been the main theme of the conversation at the meeting. But can Firat or Turk ease the tension?

Haberin Devamı

No. The "dark plan" of those living in the caves in the mountains is very different.

Note: The content of this conversation is completely fictional.
