The 16 year old prime murder suspect in Sunday's killing of priest Andrea Santoro in Trabzon's Santa Maria church was captured early yesterday morning. First year high school student O.A. was brought into custody following an intense 36 hour effort by police and security forces. Using robot-drawn sketches and eyewitness testimony to close in on the suspect's location, police and security forces entered O.A.'s home early Tuesday morning. Searches of the home revealed the murder weapon, a 9 mm, unlicensed "Sig Sauer" handgun, made in Switzerland, and not apparently used in any other crimes.
Though initial reports claimed that O.A. had listed the recent turmoil over Danish caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed as part of his motive in killing Santoro, authorities would not confirm this. Meanwhile, O.A.'s father and mother, a dental technician and a member of Trabzon's AKP Women's Group, were also brought in for questioning. Eyewitnesses who had been at the Santa Maria church on Saturday also confirmed that O.A. was part of the group of young teenagers who had come to the church on that day during a mass, and had argued briefly with Father Santoro.
