European Parliament member Andrew Duff has said the he is saddened by the fact that his negatively interpreted comments about Kemalism were reflected in the Turkish press as being a call for "the portraits of Ataturk to be taken down" from the walls of Turkish governmental offices. Duff's comments were criticized sharply by high ranking members of the Turkish Armed Forces. Duff, the vice president of the European Parliament's EU-Turkish joint commission, said his comments had been misunderstood, and yesterday issued a written statement explaining that while he admired Ataturk, he had pointed his original criticisms at the conservative nature of some of the heirs to Ataturk's legacy.

Interestingly, Duff's written statement about his views on Ataturk contained a misspelling of Ataturk's name: "Attaturk". Part of Duff's explanation of his views is as follows:
"Like all other political philosophies, Kemalism must also abide to the changes of the era. The narrow interpretation of Kemalism by some does not fit with a Turkey whose face is turned towards the EU."
