Syrian Head of State Bessar Essad, who responded to the questions of Turkish journalists in Istanbul, said; We are late to discover our common interests with Turkey. The past thought us many things. Now, it is time to evaluate them. Essad said that they would warmly approach to any initiative that Turkey would take. On whether there is a possibility for Turkey to be a mediator between Syria and Israel, Essad said, “I learned about the issue when I came to Turkey. It is the will of U.S. that will be determinant in resuming the peace process. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is going to go to Washington. We explained our position to him in detail. Prime Minister Erdogan will feel the pulses in Washington. We trust Turkey. “Regarding the fact that Hatay, one of the southernmost cities of Turkey, is still depicted in Syrian territory in some Syrian maps, Essad said, “I personally believe that I will not see those borders as our relations improve.”
