    Earthquakes rock the Aegean like a cradle this morning

    Following two smaller quakes, a noticeably larger quake located in the Aegean Sea and measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale jolted residents of Izmir this morning at 8:45. Four hours later, at 12:45, a second, larger earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale caused even more concern. Widespread panic in and around Izmir has led to the closure of area schools today.

    The first quake
    The first two quakes to rock the Aegean this morning were smaller, measuring 3 and 3.8 on the Richter. The third was a noticeable 5.7, and was felt throughout a wide swath along the Aegean when it hit at 8:45.
    According to Bosphorus University's Kandilli Earthquake Institute, the two smaller quakes took place at 7:31 and 8:17 respectively.
    Following the 5.7 quake registered at 8:45, the Aegean coast was rocked again at 8:59 by a 4.1 quake.
    The second big one this morning
    A second large quake was registered in the Izmir area this morning, again centered in the Aegean Sea, and clocking in at 5.9 on the Richter scale. Izmir area schools were closed as panicked students flooded into school gardens for safety, and Izmir Governor Oguz Koksal called a meeting of his emergency services authorities.
