Syrian leader Beshar Assad, in Ankara for an official 4 day visit, held a joint press conference yesterday with his host, President Abdullah Gul, at Cankaya Presidential Palace.

Assad signalled strong support from Damascus yesterday for Turkey's intent to take action against PKK terror forces operating out of northern Iraq, while also pointing to the responsibility born by the US invasion of Iraq for the spike in PKK activities. Said Assad:
"We of course support and back the Turkish government's decision with regards to taking action against terrorists and terror activities. We accept this as Turkey's legitimate right....It is also helpful to understand that the forces currently occupying Iraqi lands are responsible in the first degree for these terror activities."
