The merging of the Motherland Party (ANAP) and Democratic Party (DP) which had bred high hopes in a large part of the public has turned into this year’s biggest fiasco. The Motherland Party declared yesterday that they were withdrawing entirely from the general election following an YSK ruling preventing ANAP candidates from running on the DP ticket. Süleyman Sarıbaş of ANAP told journalists, “We made this decision [to merge] in order to be able to form a united whole, and in order to avoid fragmentation between the two parties. We are going to get together with the DP after the elections, and will be supporting them throughout the elections.”

Said Muammer Aydin, YSK chairman: “Even if those candidates selected to stand for ANAP resign, there is no way for them to appear on the candidate list of the DP.” The DP has filled the empty positions on the candidate list and delivered it to the YSK.
