This weekend in Istanbul a large anti-EU protest was carried out in Kadikoy, sponsored by the Turkish Communist Party in coalition with the nationalist MHP Party. Called the "People's Action against Imperialism" meeting, it drew around 3,000 people, despite rain showers in the area. "Come together on October 2 to support an independent, honorable, and enlightened country on October 3" read the banners and posters of the meeting.

Speaking to protesters, Communist Party general secretary Kemal Okuyan called on Turkish citizens to "block access to the EU," warning them "On Monday, the orders will come down from high places. Our people in Ankara are just pretending to be angry now; starting after October 3, they will say 'As you wish' to anything the EU orders. Actually, nothing new will start tomorrow. What will happen is what has been happening for years now. Turkey's economy is being systematically destroyed."
The group marched for awhile after the speakers, and then broke up after reaching Ibrahimaga.
