French President Jacques Chirac said that Turkey's membership was not convenient in existing circumstances but was desirable in the long run.

In a statement he made about the enlargement of the Europan Union, Chirac did not voice opposition against Turkey's accession to EU, but said that this did not seem possible at the moment. He said that membership negotiations with Turkey would take a long time.
