Afyon - Construction of Turkey’s first biogas energy plant, a facility that converts chicken droppings into electricity and heat, will soon begin in the central province of Afyonkarahisar, also known as Afyon for short.

Speaking at a conference in the city, Asmaz Energy Communication Construction Ltd. Chairman Mehmet Akif Asmaz said the facility would work in cooperation with the Afyon Chicken Animal Feed and Organic Fertilizer Industry and Trade Company, a group of eight egg producers.

The plant will generate 1 megawatt of electricity, 1,100 kilowatts of heat, 35 tons of solid fertilizer and 45 tons of liquid fertilizer every hour, he said, adding that the annual electricity output of 8,760 megawatts would meet 4 percent of the city’s annual consumption of 246,388 megawatts.

Speaking at the same conference, Prof. Durmuş Kaya from the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey, said Turkey has the potential to build 3,755 similar plants.
