With debate growing in Ankara over whether or not the passage of a new referendum on presidential elections would have implications for newly elected President Abdullah Gul, the ruling AKP has decided to remove two of the articles from the referendum, thus confirming Gul's position in Cankaya no matter what the outcome of the referendum.

The removal of the 18th and 19th articles from the referendum packet has received the support of opposition parties MHP, DTP, and even main opposition CHP.
