Protests in reaction to the Danish caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed were scattered throughout Turkey yesterday, with the largest, attended by an estimated 70 thousand people, taking place in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir. Two more significant ones took place in Istanbul, one in front of the French Consulate in Istanbul's Beyoglu district, the other in the historical district of Beyazit, near Istanbul University.

The Beyoglu protest was composed of around 200 people, who gathered in Taksim Square carrying posters and signs, and marched to the front entrance of the French Consulate. There, after a statement to the press, the group attempted to enter the consulate buildings, but were prevented by police from doing so. In Beyazit, a larger group of 3,000 gathered to protest against Denmark, as well as the US, Israel, and different European countries. A smaller group of 7-8 people ripped up a Danish flag in protest.
