WIth the lifting of import taxes in Bulgaria following its entrance into the EU, Bulgaria has become the destination for many of Europe's second hand cars.

Since the official start of EU membership for Bulgaria, on January 1, 2007, there has been a 46% increase in newly registered license plates across the country. Of the 40 thousand cars joining Bulgarian traffic in the past two months, only around 8 thousand have been new, while the rest have been second hand cars imported in from Western European countries. According to reports, Sofia's second hand car open markets are full to overflowing these days.

Complaints are also starting to come in from many circles about the environmental damage being wrought on Bulgaria by the exhaust fumes and leaks from the cars coming in, many of which are at least a decade old.
