Opinion letters and comments on web pages belonging to news agencies like the BBC have shown that a wide swath of the British public does not believe claims made last Thursday by police that an "unparalleled terror attack" had been narrowly avoided.

Writing on BBC's "Have Your Say" readers' forum, John Byng commented yesterday "There is something strange going on. They knew there was a threat, they have been following the case for months, but their reaction was to pull out their biggest weapon, by creating panic at the airports." Other readers have echoed Byng's comments on the BBC, noting that the tactics of the British police seem less aimed at averting a terorrist plot that fomenting terror in the hearts of citizens.
Byng's comments received the most "votes" by other readers on the BBC site. One reader, calling himself "Obe," asked others in the forum "Have you read George Orwell's '1984' and its theme of constant fear?"
