Ali didn't yet know that his brother Mehmet, 14, and his two sisters, Fatma, 15, and Hulya, 11, were dead. The boy's uncle said that the children had been playing with the dead head of the chicken, from which they are believed to have contracted the virus. Although Ali was admitted to hospital, it is believed that he didn't contract the bird flu.
The children of the Kocyigit family were the first to contract the deadly virus outside eastern Asia, where 74 people have died by the H5N1 strain since 2003.
Their 40-year-old father, Zeki, said: "The children really loved the chickens. That's why they took care of them."
