Baykal says Erdogan's 'rude language' indicates 'cultural identity problem'

Deniz Baykal, leader of the main opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party, has criticized Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his highly publicized role in a dialogue with a protesting farmer in Mersin this last weekend. Speaking in front of a CHP parliamentary group yesterday, Baykal said that the Prime Minister's use of argot and street jargon when addressing citrus farmer Kemal Oncel "shows that under this approach lies a cultural identity problem, a spiritual depression, and a difficulty that he is having carrying the ruling parties responsibilites."
Speaking further, Baykal also said "The words the PM used were not argot. They were rough, rude language. An agressive language meant to belittle the person he was speaking to. The language he used goes against our culture, our morals, our people.....And there is something which does not escape my eyes here; the Prime Minister uses this language against the downtrodden, but never when speaking to big business figures, or leaders like Chirac and Bush."
