Barroso: Bird flu will not affect Turkey's EU chances

Jose Manuel Barroso, head of the EU Commission, has said that the appearance of bird flu in Turkey and Romania should in no way affect EU accession talks for the two countries. Speaking to reporters in the Swedish capitol Stockholm, Barroso said there should be no link between the bird flu and prospective EU membership of candidate countries.
Barroso also spoke about preparations which the EU should be taking now, in the face of a possible bird flu pandemic: "The EU, seeing that the current preparations are not enough, will not avoid taking effective steps to prevent the spread of bird flu." Barroso did not however give concrete information as to what steps were currently being taken.
