Bank of England warns inflation to hit 3.6 pct this year

The Bank of England warned on Wednesday that the annual rate of inflation, which hit 3.0 percent last month, could spike to 3.6 percent this year owing to soaring energy and food prices.

In a key quarterly report containing its latest forecasts, the BoE said: "In the central projection, higher energy and import prices push inflation up sharply in the near term."

On Tuesday, official data showed inflation jumped way above the official target to an annual rate of 3.0 percent in April, driven by soaring commodity prices.

The April reading was above the Bank of England's 2.0 percent target for the seventh month in a row and was well above market forecasts for 2.6 percent.

The BoE's rate-setting monetary policy committee (MPC) held its key short-term interest rate at 5.0 percent last week as it balanced slowing economic growth with growing inflationary pressures.
