The Turkish government plans to sell of its media companies, which were gained back in the banking crisis four years ago. The auction is expected to go ahead in March and include some of the biggest: television and radio stations, newspapers and magazines.Some members of the government see this as an attempt to break up the present forces that dominate the media and de-monopolize the Turkish media once and for all. Ahmet Tezcan, senior advisor to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his concern to the New York Times: " It's a disgraceful situation now, It's all because the media owners jumped into financial markets, and there has always been an unhealthy relationship between media and politics." What must happen before these media outlets are sold is for the Turkish government to lay down some new rules to establish how regulated these new media companies will be. Â
