In Ankara, where the bird flu crisis is being discussed by government ministers, the administration has called on citizens to "be comfortable and rest assured," and has also announced that they will be recompensating poultry farmers whose animals have been forcibly destroyed for health reasons. Agricultural Minister Mehdi Eker, in a briefing to government ministers yesterday, pointed to the low human population of the area in question as being a positive factor. Minister Eker told the cabinet that the virus had been determined to be bird flu on Friday evening, and that following immediately on that, the area had been quarantined and precautions to keep the situation under control had been taken. Health Minister Recep Akdag noted that there were no recorded human cases of bird flu anywhere in Turkey.

Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Cemil Cicek said "Bird flu is only present in this one region. Our citizens need to stay relaxed regarding this matter. As soon as they knew what was happening, the Agricultural and Health ministries took all the necessary precautions
