One of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's top political advisor's, Omer Celik, in an interview published in the Alem magazine, has characterized secularism as being "Turkey's nuclear power." Celik, who is also the Justice and Development (AKP) Party's MP from Adana, said that PM Erdogan was "unwilling to make concessions on the country's basic policies, but on other subjects, an incredibly quick decision-maker, with a practical personality."

Celik noted that Turkey's ability to keep itself distanced from chronic political crises and social chaos was due to principles of secularity that lie at the basis of the republic: "It is clear that the biggest strength in Turkey's hand is the principle of secularity. The principle of secularity ensures our inner peace, as well as helping to protect us from the boiling pots of water all around us....I see secularity as being our nuclear power."
Celik also said that he saw the EU accession process as being the continuation of the republic's modernization project, a process started with Ataturk and the definition of the ideals of the modern Turkish Republic.
