The iftar meal held yesterday at Istanbul's Cevahir Hotel, at which German PM Schroeder was the guest of honor, had a full 1,500 invitees on its list. From religious leaders like Greek Patriarch Bartholomeus to noteables from the Turkish sports world, the guests also included members of the foreign diplomatic community, as well as leaders from PM Erdogan's Justice and Development (AKP) Party. The menu for the iftar, which was held under the slogan "A meeting of civilizations," was traditional: lentil soup, cheese borek, salad, pilaf and lamb, and for dessert, rose-fwater flavored gullac.

During his speech after the dinner, German PM Schroeder related to the audience the late-breaking news that the Turkish national football team had scored a goal against the Albanian national team, which put them one ahead in a crucial march towards the World Cup in 2006. Applause broke out in the audience, and Schroeder said "I have just spoken with my advisor, and we want Turkey to compete in the World Championships to be held in Germany."
