Greek newspapers yesterday carried glimpses of the tension experienced between British and Greek Cypriot diplomats before the start of Turkey's EU accession talks in Luxembourg. According to stories published in the To Vima and Fileleftheros newspapers, during discussions of Turkey's international veto rights, British Foreign Minister Jack Straw referred to Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister Yorgo Yakovo as "Mr. Greek Cypriot Foreign Minister." When FM Yakovo reacted angrily to this, Straw reportedly said "I am sorry. Over the past hours, I have spoken with the Turks so many times, I have no doubt been affected."

Further reports in the Greek newspaper said that there was also tension between British FM Straw and Greek Foreign Minister Petros Moliviyatis. Apparently, Moliviyatis sent Straw two different messages, the first being "If you want another Austria to be created here, that could happen," and the second being "Abdullah Gul may come to Luxembourg, but before he comes, I will go."
