Pressure mounted on Turkey on Sunday when Greek Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos told the Greek Ethnos newspaper, "Should Ankara fail to honor its obligations to Cyprus, Greek Cypriots could veto Turkey's European Union bid." Papadopoulos added that although Cyprus had the power to use such powers, it would only be acted upon as a last resort. When asked if a veto was among the government's choices, Papadopoulos said, "It certainly is."

"A veto is more effective when you have convinced the others you have reached the ultimate position you can compromise on, and when they are also convinced the other side behaves unreasonably," he was quoted as telling the newspaper.

Such direct statements show a move towards a bolder stance over the Cyprus issue.
