Greek Cypriot school history books will be revised to help build understanding with the divided island's Turkish Cypriot community, the Greek Cypriot education minister said.

"The changes will compensate for some omissions concerning the island's turbulent recent history", Andreas Dimitriou told the AP, and added a committee will oversee the revision.

But the minister said it will take "more than a year" before students get the new books.

Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders last week set Sept 3 as the date when they will begin direct negotiations to end the 44-year-old division of the Mediterranean island.

Reunification talks on the island have been deadlocked since 2004, when Greek Cypriots rejected a U.N. reunification blueprint in a referendum, in which Turkish Cypriots approved the so-called Annan plan. Cyprus has been divided since 1964 when Turkish Cypriots forced to withdraw into enclaves.
