The part of the group meeting of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), which was held closed to press, turned into a kind of “Iraq Session.” Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul briefed the MPs about the developments regarding the Iraq issue upon the request of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.Gonul said, “Infrastructure in Iraq is a mess. There is no road or water. There is the lack of electricity. We should go there as soon as possible, as a neutral country. We have four reasons to send troops to Iraq. The most important one of them is the integrity of Iraq. The second one is threat, posed to Turkey from Iraq, such as PKK-KADEK. The third one is Kirkuk-Yumurtalik Pipeline. And the final one is the ethnic groups in Iraq, which will have equal rights after transition to democracy. Turkey, that sent troops to Somalia and Korea, cannot remain silent to what is happening in the near vicinity of her. Turkey should go to her neighbor immediately.”Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan supported Gonul by saying, “Contemplate on what Mr. Vecdi said carefully. We will get authorization from Parliament to conduct high-level talks on the issue. We will take our decision in the shortest possible time.”
