Papandreu, who along with former Finish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen was attending meetings of the European Socialist Party's High Council Group in relation to the Turkish EU accession talks, spoke about the Cyprus question as well. Said Papandreu: "It is time to try again in Cyprus. We must use our shared values to examine the problem again and come up with a solution that the two peoples on the island can accept."
Leader of the main opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party, Deniz Baykal, had sharp words for his fellow European ministers at the Ankara meetings. Baykal reminded former Finnish PM Lipponen of his promise that Cyprus would not be made a pre-condition for EU talks, and criticized the EU for allowing it to be made so in the latest stages of the process
