Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul held a press conference yesterday in which he repeated the previously stated assertion that "without seeing the final version of the framework documents, we will not leave for Luxembourg." The final vote on the EU accession talks framework documents has been put off until Sunday evening, just hours before the scheduled start talks are to begin on Monday morning.

FM Abdullah Gul: We will not leave for Luxembourg without seeing the document

Gul said that he found it natural that the framework document vote be left to the high level EU ministers, as the issue was so important. Gul also noted that while there were some serious problems faced by the accession talks process, there were also heavy diplomatic efforts underway to rescue the process. Gul added that the EU knew very well which requirements Turkey could never accept. Interestingly, Gul also stressed that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not perceive the problems facing Turkey's EU talks as being "very serious," saying that the PM wanted "each side to be satisfied with the process."  Greeks put in last minute request to see copy of Gul's speech In the face of these last minute barriers to getting the talks underway, the Greek Cypriot authority has reportedly put another request before Turkey: according to news coming in from Brussels, the Greek Cypriots are demanding to see a copy of the speech planned by FM Gul for the opening of the accession talks. It is thought that there is concern among the Greeks that there may be harsh criticism of the Cypriot authority in Gul's speech, and that Papadopolous and others want to be ready to counter charges made by Gul.
