Five Turkish soldiers have been killed in clashes with members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist group in the southeast mountainous province of Tunceli. The soldiers were killed by members of the group after tracking down the terrorists in a steep valley during large scale operations in the east of Turkey, said military officials. Soldiers from the operations, which are being carried out by 8,000 troops, backed by air support, came across a group of terrorists near to Cirali village.

The five soldiers were killed in a gun battle that took place, a military official said. More troops were being airlifted into the Kutuderesi valley, north of the town of Tunceli passing Cirali village.

A wide scale operation was launched late on Sunday night following the kidnapping of a police officer at a makeshift road block by the terrorists.

The region of Tunceli with it's mountains and caves has long been a hiding place for the terrorist organization.
