Istanbul's Mayor, Kadir Topbas, is leaving the country for an official visit to England today, and in doing so, is for the first time in the history of the republic leaving a female in charge of the city. 33 year old Derya Yanik, a lawyer and a city parliamentary member, will be in authority during Topbas' absence. Speaking about the temporary transfer of power, Yanik had this to say: "It is a first in the history of the municipality.

It is a very kind gesture on the part of the Mayor, and from a political perspective of course, a very great thing." On his way to London for the day, Topbas made this comment: "Women are in the political system these days. AKP (the ruling party) in particular wants for women to take active roles in politics. For the first time in history, a woman will be in control of the Istanbul Municipaliy, even if only for a day. I think this is important for Turkey. It is the first time I have delegated a female counterpart as head of a department."
